Dans cet article je vais simplement vous parler de quelque chose que je trouve cool. J’ai essayé de l’amener dans le style général de notre blog, mais je n’y suis pas arrivée. Cependant je veux vraiment vraiment vous parler de ce sortilège, car c’est mon préféré. Je veux juste que vous le connaissiez. Ce sortilège peut être trouvé dans le livre « La littérature orale en Gaspésie » de Carmen Roy, aux pages 84 et 85. Je l’ai retranscrit ici en ramenant son vocabulaire en 2022:
Je l’aime parce qu’il est long et détaillé. Je l’aime parce qu’il traite d’un problème de santé pour lequel il n’y avait pas de traitement en médecine moderne à ce moment-là. Je l’aime parce que, selon Roy, il est répandu au Canada, mais non répertorié en France. C’est ce dernier détail qui le rend si spécial à mes yeux, parce qu’il est le nôtre.
“Pour les personnes ayant un utérus en dérangement, qui n’ont pas d’enfants, on replace la matrice et on traite les ovaires comme suit” conseillent les sages-femmes:
Dissoudre une cuillerée à soupe de moutarde dans une pinte d’eau. Imbiber une flanelle de cette solution et appliquer, durant une heure ou une heure et demie, de compresses sur l’abdomen du.de la patient.e.
Frotter l’intérieur d’une soucoupe avec une gousse d’ail (Allium canadense) et, en la tournant “trois fois à rebours du soleil”, la placer dans le nombril du.de la patient.e. Elle colle et pénètre. La laisser là jusqu’à ce qu’elle se soulève d’elle-même.
Pendant ce temps, battre en neige, trois blancs d’oeuf, une demie-cuillerée à thé de poivre, trois tranches de savon à laver. Étendre sur une petite épaisseur d’étoupe de France (étoupe goudronnée) et verser sur le tout une cuillère à soupe de sapin (Abies balsamea) fondu. Appliquer le cataplasme sur le ventre de la malade, en plaçant le côté goudronné sur la peau.
Au cours de ces trois traitements, le.la patient.e ne doit rien soulever de lours, pas même le poids d’une livre. Elle ne doit pas peigner ses cheveux elle-même, ni replacer sa chaise à table. Elle peut circuler avec son cataplasme qui est bien ceinturé autour de son ventre. Elle gardera ce dernier jusqu’à ce qu’il tombe de lui-même, ce qui peut prendre une quarantaine de jours. » (Très répandu en Gaspésie)

In this article I’m just going to share with you something I find rather cool. I tried to bring it into the general style of our blog, but I couldn’t. However I really want to tell you about this spell, because it is my favorite. I just want you to know about it. This spell can be found in the book « La littérature orale en Gaspésie » by Carmen Roy, on pages 84 and 85. I have transcribed it here by updating its vocabulary to fit more with a 2022 audience.
I like it because it is long and detailed. I like it because it deals with a health problem for which there was no treatment in modern medicine at that time. I like it because, according to Roy, it is widespread in Canada, but not listed in France. It’s that last detail that makes it so special to me, because it’s ours:
“For people with a uterus who suffer from some imbalance of the reproductive system, we must rejuvenate the womb and treat the ovaries as follows”, as so counsel the midwives:
Dissolve a tablespoon of mustard in a pint of water. Imbibe a piece of linen clothes in this solution and apply it, for one to one and a half hours, as a compress upon the abdomen of the patient.
Thereafter rub the inside of a saucer with a clove of garlic and, while turning it “three times counterclockwise”, then place it on the patient’s navel. It will stick and penetrate there. Leave it there until it lifts of its own accord.
During this time, whip into peaks, three egg whites, a half-teaspoon of pepper, three slivers of washing soap. Spread out a small piece of tarred oakum, add the paste thereupon and pour a spoonful of warm balsam gum over it all. Apply the poultice on the belly of the patient, the tarred side down.
Over the course of these three treatments, the patient must not lift anything heavy, not even weighing only a pound. They must not brush their hair on their own, neither place back their chair at the table. They can walk around with their poultice well bound to their belly. They will keep this on them until it falls off of its own accord, which can take up to forty days. » (this is very common in Gaspésie.)
