Les temps forts

L’année des Canadiens français était marquée par des temps “forts”, qui étaient le moment où on entreprenait certaines activités tel que les semences, les récoltes ou autres obligations. C’était aussi un moment pour certains actes de sorcellerie, car on considérait que ces moments prêtaient leur force au travail magique.   

Ce qui rendait un temps “fort” reposait typiquement sur le saint qui était vénéré cette journée là, selon le calendrier des saints de l’Église catholique. On parle ici du calendrier avant les réformes de Vatican II, donc le calendrier romain général d’avant 1954. Plusieurs de ces journées étaient importantes au Moyen-âge et le folklore les entourant, basé sur le travail des hémérologistes, a perduré dans la culture du Canada français. La lune était aussi excessivement importante et, comme pour d’autres cultures autour du monde, les phases de cet astre dictaient quand certaines activités devaient avoir lieu. 

Bien qu’il y ait plusieurs exemples au travers des travaux ethnographiques et des anecdotes ayant trait aux Canadiens français, la majorité des informations suivantes proviennent des pages 85 à 97 du livre Croyances et Pratiques Populaires au Canada Français de Pierre desRuisseaux. Voici quelques exemples d’actions qui devaient être entreprisent ou évitées certains jours particuliers:

Dimanche: Cette journée est dite forte en ce qui a trait aux ongles, à la forge, à la couture et à la coupe du bois. Si on coupe les ongles d’un enfant cette journée-là, ils repousseront comme les griffes du diable. Il est malchanceux de frapper une enclume avec un marteau ou de coudre les dimanches. Si quelqu’un bûchait du bois cette journée-là, leur âme sera emprisonnée sur la lune pour l’éternité.

Lundi: Cette journée est “forte” en ce qui à trait aux ongles, à la correspondance, aux dents et des relations interpersonnelles. Concernant les ongles, s’ils sont occupés cette journée, on peut s’attendre à un mal de dent qui dure une semaine et aussi à recevoir une lettre inattendue. Si vous recevez un invité ou rencontrez une personne par hasard un lundi, le reste de la semaine en sera affectée. 

Mardi: Le mardi était un temps fort pour les mariages. Si on se mariait un mardi, vous ne serez pas riche, mais vous serez maître chez vous. 

Mercredi: Le mercredi est un temps fort en ce qui  trait à la paix, la joie et l’affection, mais est malchanceux pour quiconque est né en cette journée. Cette journée est la meilleure pour ressentir la paix et le bonheur ainsi que pour apprécier la compagnie d’amis ou partenaires. Cependant, si vous êtes nés un mercredi, vous allez avoir une vie malheureuse. I don’t make the rules.

Jeudi: Jeudi est un jour de naissance chanceux. Les gens nés le jeudi auront une vie heureuse. 

Vendredi: Cette journée est un jour fort pour les affaires, la météo et emprunter ou rendre quelque chose. Les personnes nées cette journée auront du succès en affaires. Si le mauvais temps commence le vendredi, il perdurera. Si vous prêter quelque chose un vendredi, on ne vous le rendra pas.

Samedi: On dit que le samedi est un temps fort pour ce qui a trait aux vêtements, aux ongles, au rasage et aux voyages. Il est aussi malchanceux d’être né un samedi. Il est malchanceux de porter de nouveaux vêtements un samedi. Si vous vous coupez les ongles un samedi, vous allez voyager bientôt. Un enfant né samedi, aura de la difficulté à gagner votre vie. 

Voici quelques exemples de jours forts au travers de l’année et ce qui devrait être entrepris ou non ces jours là. 

6 janvier – Jour des Rois: le 6 janvier, on doit manger la galette des rois, un gâteau dans lequel est caché un pois. Celui qui trouvera le pois dans sa portion sera considéré comme de la royauté pour la journée. 

2 février – Chandeleur: cette journée est une bonne journée pour travailler la farine afin de s’assurer une bonne récolte de blé l’année suivante. (Ile-du-Prince-Édouard)

Mardi gras: Journée de crêpes. Il est coutume de manger des crêpes avant les privations du carême. 

Dimanche des rameaux: Placer des rameaux bénis dans votre maison sans les déplacer de toute l’année protégera votre logis.

Vendredi saint: il est fortement recommandé “de ne pas labourer la terre, planter des clous, regarder dans un miroir ou aller voir les filles”. 

Pâques: avant le lever du soleil, puiser de l’eau d’un ruisseau ou d’une coulée. Cette eau guérira les maladies des yeux et des oreilles si appliquée localement.

Mai: La première pluie ou neige de mai aura des vertues curatives.

3 juin – Fête-dieu: On fait des processions au travers des champs pour s’assurer de bonnes récoltes. La pluie de cette journée ruinera la récolte de fraise. 

24 juin – Saint-Jean: avant le lever du soleil, récolter des herbes (armoise, bardane, plantain…) qui seront au faîte de leur puissance et le resteront toute l’année. 

2 juillet – La Visitation: Journée de crêpes. Il est commun de manger des crêpes en commémoration de la visitation de Marie à Elisabeth. 

24 août – Saint-Barthelémy: le beurre baratté cette journée fera un puissant onguent aux propriétés miraculeuses. 

1ier novembre – Toussaint: journée pour visiter les tombes de la famille. 

2 novembre – Jour des morts: on tenait des encans pour payer des messes pour les âmes au purgatoires afin de les aider à atteindre le paradis

4 décembre: si la météo est clémente cette journée là, il fera beau jusqu’à Noël. 

24 décembre: À minuit, on dit qu’on peut entendre les animaux parler dans la grange. 

Les 12 jours de Noël: on note la température à chacun des douze jours suivant Noël et celle-ci prédira la température du mois qui lui est associé l’année qui suit. 

Pour les différentes phases de la lune, nous avons ces anecdotes.  

Lune croissant: Cette phase est un temps fort pour les naissances. Si un enfant ou un animal est né en lune croissante, ils auront une bonne santé.

Pleine lune: Cette phase est un temps fort par rapport à la plantation des fruits aériens. Une plante qui porte ses fruits au dessus de la terre doit être plantée durant la pleine lune. 

Lune décroissante: Cette phase est un temps fort pour la plantation des plantes à tubercules et fruits souterrains. C’est aussi le bon temps pour couper les mauvaises herbes, car elles repousseront plus lentement. 

Pour les pratiquant.es de la Sorcellerie comme nous, il est important de se souvenir que nous n’observons pas le jour de fête catholique, à moins que l’un d’entre vous soit un chrétien, mais que nous utilisons plutôt la force de ces journées pour les ajouter à nos travaux magiques.  Nous nous tournons vers le folklore et les thèmes associés avec les journées de la semaine, les fêtes et les phases de la lune pour planifier le meilleurs moment pour commencer un travail magique. Pour la sorcière moderne, ces associations servent de guide. Chaque pratiquant.e aura sa propre façon d’interpréter ces associations et comment les utiliser à leur plein potentiel. C’est de cette manière que la puissance personnelle est cultivée dans le système de magie canadienne fançaise. 

Un.e pratiquant.e peut, par exemple, avoir besoin de faire un sortilège pour améliorer leur chevelure. Iel pourrait choisir de ne couper ses cheveux que pendant la lune ascendante, pour promouvoir une pousse rapide et aussi d’ajouter un peu d’eau de Pâques avant de démêler ses cheveux. Peut-être que quelques traitements avec du beurre de Barthélemy ce je-ne-sais-quoi magique? Tous ces éléments peuvent être intégrés dans un rituel puissant qui incarne l’essence de la Sorcellerie.

Introduction to « les temps forts »

The French Canadian observational year was marked by days and certain times which were considered to be “fort” [IPA: fɔʁ], that is to say “strong” days which would be the time of the year one would undertake certain activities, such as planting, harvesting or other domestic/agricultural duties. This was also a time for magical workings as these days were thought to imbue a certain power to the workings being performed. 

What made a day of the year (or of the week) fort typically relied on the saint which was venerated on that day, thus the calendar of saints of the Catholic Church. For French Canadians, this would have been prior to the calendar reforms of the Second Vatican Council, thus the General Roman Calendar of 1954 or earlier. Many of these days were important in the middle ages and the folklore surrounding them, based on the efforts hemerologists, carried them through into the fabric of French Canadian culture. The moon was also exceedingly important to the people, like most other cultures around the world, and so the phases of the night-time celestial body also dictated when certain actions were to take place.  

Although there are many examples throughout the many ethnographic works and anecdotes relating to French Canadians, for the bulk of the information provided below we will be using a section of Croyances et Pratiques Populaires au Canada Français by Pierre desRuisseaux pp. 85-97. Here are a few examples of actions which should be taken or avoided on particular weekdays:

Sunday: This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of finger nails, blacksmithing, sewing and woodcutting. If a child’s nails are cut on this day they will grow devils’ claws. It is also unlucky to use a hammer on this day or ring an anvil . It is unlucky to sew on Sundays and if one cuts wood on this day, their soul will be imprisoned for eternity in the moon.

Monday: This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of finger nails, correspondence, teeth and companionship. Concerning fingernails, if they are cut on this day, expect a week long toothache. Likewise, you may expect to receive mail under the same circumstance. If you receive a guest or have a chance meeting, on this day such would be significant.  

Tuesday: This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of marriage. If you get married on a Tuesday, you will not be rich, but at home you will be the master of your domain .

Wednesday: This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of peace, happiness and affection, unlucky as a birth day. This day is the best for experiencing peace and happiness as well as sharing in mutual affection with friends and partners. but if you are born on this day, you will overall have an unhappy life. I don’t make the rules.

Thursday: This day is lucky as a birth day.  If one is born on this day, they will have a happy life.

Friday: This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of business, weather and borrowing/lending. If one is born on this day, they will have great success in business. If bad weather begins on a friday, it will last for some time.If you lend something on a Friday, it will not be returned to you.

Saturday:This day is said to be fort concerning the realm of clothing, finger nails, shaving and travel. This day is unlucky as a birth day. If you wear new clothes on this day it is lucky. If you cut your nails or shave on a Saturday, you will soon travel. A child born on a Saturday will  have a hard time making a living throughout life.

Here are some examples of days of the year which are said to be forts and what should be undertaken or avoided:

January 6th: Jour des Rois – on this day one should eat a “gâteau des rois”, which is a cake containing a pea inside, if one gets a slice with the pea inside, they will be royalty on that day. 

February 2nd: Chandeleur – on this day it is good to work the flour so that there will be a good wheat harvest in the coming year (Prince Edward Island).

Mardi Gras: Mardi gras – this day is considered a journée crêpes (pancake day), on this day it is customary to eat pancakes prior to the deprivation Lent. 

Palm Sunday: Dimanche des Rameaux – on this day placing a blessed palm frond in your home and not moving it under any pretext will protect one’s home. 

Good Friday: Vendredi saint – on this day it was strongly advised not to plant, hammer nails, look in a mirror or go see one’s girlfriend as this would be unlucky. 

Easter: Pâques – on this day, before sunrise, if one goes out to a stream and collects running water, this water will be good against diseases of the eye and ear. The water would be applied topically as a curative. 

May: On the first rain or snow of May, this water is to be collected as it is a curative.  

June 3rd: Fête-Dieu – on this day processions throughout the fields will bring a good harvest, but rain on this day will damage strawberry plants. 

June 24th: Saint-Jean – on this day, before sunrise, if one collects herbs (such as mugwort, burdock, plantain, etc.) these will remain powerful all year and can be used in a variety of treatments. 

July 2nd: Visitation – this day is considered a journée crêpes (pancake day), on this day it is customary to eat pancakes in commemoration of the visitation of Mary to Elisabeth. 

August 24th: Saint-Barthélemy – on this day it is believed that if butter is made it will be a powerful unguent with miraculous properties. 

November 1st: Toussaint – this day is a time to visit the graves of relatives.

November 2nd: Jour des morts – on this day are to be held auctions for the souls in purgatory, money raised in their honour will help them attain heaven.  

December 4th: If the weather is fair on this day, it will be fair leading up to Noël. 

December 24th: At midnight, it is said that the animals in the barn gain the power to speak. 

Twelve Days of Christmas: Les douze jours de Noël – during the twelve days, the weather of each is said to foretell the weather of the months to come.   

On the phases of the moon, we have these anecdotes:

Strengthening moon (between first quarter and the full): This moon is said to be fort regarding the realm of birth. If a child or an animal is born as the moon begins to strengthen, then they will be of good health. 

Full: This moon is said to be fort regarding the realm of planting (fruiting plants). Any plant which is intended to produce fruits above ground, must be planted on the full moon.

Waning: This moon is said to be fort regarding the realm of planting (what grows tubers). Any plant which is intended to produce tubers underground, must be planted on the waning of the moon. This is also a good time to cut weeds, as if weeds are cut on the waning moon, they will not grow so fast. 

For practitioners of Sorcellerie such as us, it is important to remember that it is not the Christian holiday or the holiness of that particular day – as described by the Church – that we observe (unless one is Christian), but rather the “strength” of that day and the power it imbues our workings. We look to the folk beliefs and the themes which are associated with that weekday, holiday or moon so that we can best plan for the strongest workings. For the modern Sorcier.e we look to the associations as our guides. Each practitioner will have their own ways of interpreting these associations and how best to use them in magical work. This is how personal power is cultivated over time in the French Canadian magical stream. 
A practitioner may – as an example – need to do a working that will help improve the quality of their hair. They may choose to only cut their hair on the strengthening moon, to promote fast growth and then comb in some eau de Pâques to add vitality. Perhaps a few treatments with some Beurre de Saint-Barthélemy will give one’s locks that needed magical je ne sais quoi? And all of these things can be worked into a powerful ritual which embodies the essence of la Sorcellerie.
